Dining out
There are several fine places to dine at less than 20 minutes drive away, including two of the state's most highly regarded restaurants:
- Vulcans at Blackheath has 2 SMH Chefs Hats (BYO, open Friday to Sunday). Phillip Searle's food is to die for and makes this a mandatory pilgrimage for any serious foodie. The menu is short, sweet and handwritten with both European and Asian influences in his creations. The pick - Phil's famous checkerboard ice-cream has to be experienced. Tel: 02 4787 6899
- Ashcrofts at Blackheath recently won Restaurant of the Year for the Central West/ACT and Blue Mountains region at the Catering Association's 2006 Awards for Excellence in NSW (licensed and BYO, open Wednesday to Sunday). Good service with a stylish, slick interior. Chef Corinne Evatt creates a mouthwatering range of seasonal dishes with both Asian and contemporary Australian influences. The pick - the eyecatching vanilla bean custard with spun toffee (yes, another dessert :-)). Tel: 02 4787 8297
Advance booking is required for both restaurants and this can be arranged on your behalf. Prices average at $70 to $80 per person for a 3-course meal.
